In early Mediterranean churches, sects disputed belief systems in favor of direct engagement with truth through experience, through knowledge. Gnostics taught that understanding did not require proclamation or authority, but through disciplined work with the self and with nature.

While emerging ecclesiastical structures at the time sought to unify teachings as strictly inheritable through their orders, the natural desire for autonomy lived on in the Gnostic.
