The Crusades

The Knights Templar and Hospitalier were charity bands of defenders, assisting travelers during the Crusades. Their usage of secrets and symbolism, such as the quest for the Holy Grail, would draw the ire of the Church. Roughly 700 years later, the Vatican would apologize for their hand in violent acts against the orders.
